The address
78-7100 Kaleiopapa St., Kailua-Kona, Hawaii 96740. Put that into your maps app rather than searching for the harbour or the tour name — both send people to the wrong side of the bay.
You are looking for the check-in van. Your ticket confirmation carries the specific instructions for your departure; read it before you leave, because check-in details occasionally differ by slot.
Drive times
Keauhou sits just south of Kailua-Kona town. Allow more than the map says if you are driving at dusk — Highway 19 through town is slow in the evening, and the last stretch is residential.
- Kailua-Kona town / Aliʻi Drive — about 10–15 minutes. The easy one.
- Kona International Airport (KOA) — about 30–35 minutes south.
- Waikoloa Beach Resort — about 45–55 minutes. Leave a buffer; this is the drive people underestimate.
- Mauna Lani / Mauna Kea / Kohala coast resorts — about an hour to an hour and ten.
- Captain Cook / South Kona — about 20–30 minutes north.
- Hilo — about two to two and a half hours across the island. Doable, but a long drive home in the dark afterwards.
- Volcano / Volcanoes National Park — roughly two and a half hours. Do not try to pair these on the same day.
Parking, read this part
The harbour does not provide a guest parking lot. Three things to know:
- Do not park in the trailer stalls. You will be towed or ticketed. These are for vehicles with boat trailers and they are enforced.
- Free street parking is available along the side of the road, and is what most guests use.
- There are limited free spaces in the beach parking lot by the Outrigger hotel. They fill up early in the evening.
Arriving thirty minutes early is partly about the briefing and partly about finding a space without stress.
If you are staying up the Kohala coast
This is the most common planning mistake. An hour each way turns a ninety-minute tour into a four-hour evening, and tours sometimes run late for ordinary reasons. Two suggestions:
- Take a later departure rather than a sunset one. You avoid rush-hour traffic through Kailua-Kona, the site is quieter, and the sightings are statistically better anyway.
- Plan your afternoon on the Kona side. Spend the day south — a morning on the reef, coffee country after lunch, dinner in Kailua-Kona — and the drive stops being a round trip.
See things to do in Kona for ways to fill that afternoon.
Timing on the night
The tour runs about an hour and twenty from check-in to back on land, with roughly fifty minutes dock to dock and about thirty of those in the water. Add parking and the drive home.
Keep the hour either side free. Check-in times occasionally shift with weather, boat capacity and the season's sunset, and the crew will call or text — so keep your phone on and reachable through the day of your tour. Do not book a dinner reservation immediately afterwards.
